Losing my mind!!!!
« on: June 27, 2012, 05:28:16 PM »
I now know that the joke about the onion and the Rochester 4Jet is absolutely true. To make a long story short: I have a 58 Buick Roadmaster 75 that has never given me any real trouble in 10 years as I've slowly worked on it. Finally I got into taking apart the carburetor and I'm already about to toss the whole thing out the window. The whole thing is clean, but it's always worked like crap. Boggy in the turns, idles way too rich in the cold, dies out when it's too hot. The starts are so rough I'm eating starters and solenoids for breakfast. The barrels look good but every rod and screw is corroded and the corrosion is creeping into the body. I replaced the gaskets on the carb a few weeks ago. I didn't even put it back in the car yet, and I can't get the damn thing open again. I'm not all that great with carbs to begin with, apparently I have bitten off way more than I can chew with this one.

I see a few of you here have talked about replacing a Rochester with a Carter. I've been told again and again to be prepared to just replace the hunk of junk and get it over with, so I wouldn't cry in my Lead Additive about that. I know even less about Carter than I do about Rochester. I'm at my wit's end here with this thing. This is my first really big project and I'm already feeling like a total dope. Your thoughts on total replacement, and if so, with what? Thanks.

 Welcome to Cliff's High Performance!

I don't mean to sound rude, but, just replacing the gaskets WILL NOT fix the problem. You need a great rebuild kit, advice on tuning the quadrajet properly and some patience. There is nothing wrong with your Qjet. Send it to Cliff if you have a problem with it. Or buy good rebuild kit and ask a lot questions on it, on how to properly rebuild it. :)

4GC, not a Q-jet.  We see a few of them, and I really hate to see them coming.  In almost all cases, they require a LOT of work to get everything sorted out with them, in addition to rebuilding them with new ethanol compatible parts.  We don't stock parts for them, aside from the accl pumps, at best I'll get 2-3 calls a year about them.....Cliff
