Wrong length primary metering rods?
« on: July 05, 2012, 12:56:01 PM »
I have a quadra jet model 17084502  2373  HNX
This carb is on a 1984 Motorhome with a chevy 454 and auto trans.
My Primary metering rods are 49M
Jets are 73
Secondary rods are DH
When I opened up the carb, I discovered that the primary metering rods pop out of the jets when the power piston is resting on its pressed in plastic upper stop.  the stop is pressed in all the way.
The hangar does not appear to be bent, nor do the rods.
The rods are 2 3/8" long from the tip to the top of the Z bend.  (total rod length)
Can anyone tell me which primary rods, Jets, and secondary rods were in this carb originally, with the above application?
Thanks

don't know which lenght is which right off the top of my head (older vs newer) and I'm sure someone will chime in on that real quick, but are you experiencing any problem ?  Why did you open the carb ?  Seems kind of lean part throttle with just those numbers (jets and rods).

Welcome to the board, by the way.  Lots of information and experts around here.

Thanks Frank for the reply.
I opened it because Gas mileage was worse than terrible.
4.5 mpg being extremely nice to it in the mountains, and it should be 7-8 on the 1984 pace arrow.
Just bought the Motorhome.
I did find the problem with the rods.
Someone had missed the holes in the jets when installing the needles, and bolted the top on anyway.  Bent the hangar and the needles would not reach the jets.
I straightened the hanger.  Both sides are equal so the needles will be at the same height in the jets. The needles appeared to be OK.
They also removed the choke plate----as in gone--LOL
All 4 mount bolts were finger tight, as were all screws in the carb.
It is a wonder the beast was running at all.
It was actually running great.  Just drank gas.
Secondaries were working great.
Without the primary needles, the carb did not lean out at cruise.
I guess the vacuum leaks were able to keep up with all that flowing gasoline.  I did not see any rich smoke while the engine was running.  I could however smell it while idling.
I think the jets are probably large enough, as at no time was the engine wanting for fuel.
I just put a kit in it and put it back together.  Going to put it back on the rig and try to set the lean stop for the primary needles.  Will report back.

"M" series metering rods are the correct length for that carburetor.  Make sure the hanger is fully seated in the power piston, and arms exactly level and even, and it will be fine....Cliff

Thanks for the info on the M being the correct rods Curt.
Carb is back on and working.
Just trying to adjust it out properly.
May have problems tho as I don't think the Idle air screws are having a whole lot of effect.
I can stall the engine when turning them in, but I cannot create a rough idle when I turn them way out--More than 4 turns.
Going to use a vac gauge on it for max vac with the idle screws and see what happens.
Will the primary needle lean stop have any effect on the curb idle?
