1 dripping primary at idle?
« on: December 05, 2012, 05:18:58 AM »
I have a 1969 cadillac eldorado.Motor is all stock with 75000 original miles.Carb is rebuilt including bushings and runs fine.Till yesterday. It was loading up at idle a bit. Both primary nozzles were dripping every three or 4 seconds.I pulled carb apart and everything looked clean and float seemed to operate freely and was set at proper level. The float bowl was full and all the other pockets around it were as well.I cleaned and blew everything out, lowered float a bit and re-assembled.Car runs fine as usual but the primary nozzle on just the drivers side still drips intermitently. If i lightly tap top of bowl it stops and will be fine for awhile then may or may not start dripping again after driving. To me it seems both sides should be dripping not just one side.Air horn is not leaking around gasket externally either.Im a little stumped. It is not flooding itself and carb does not drip when motor is shut off and it it seems to drip only when it wants to and idles a little rough.I am going to try and find a float and another carb kit locally today as i am leaving albuquerque thursday morning for california and dont have time to order anything.Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I should add i have 18 inches of vacuum at idle and set af with vacuum gauge.Car does not stumble at all and is very responsive off idle.No vacuum leaks that i can find.Everything internally appears to be oem.It is a 48 state carb and i do live at 5600 feet in altitude.

Could have some restriction in one of the idle tubes.  I'd wait and get one of our kits, far superior to over the counter stuff, and the float is included in our kit, along with a new filter/spring, and complete accl pump assembly with new springs.....Cliff

I got some mr magoo glasses and saw a very small spot where horn was not sealing on the side that was dripping.I cleaned everything out thoroughly and put a new gasket on first and put the old one on top of it and tightened air horn pretty snug.Horn has a bow in it and so does the body of carb but they pretty much match eachother except for the spot on the drivers side.I re-installed carb and it ran perfect right away.I just got back from my trip and everything was fine with carb.I checked for the drip a number of times and saw nothing and it idled even smoother once i got down in altitude.I was getting around 15 mph which isnt too shabby for a big old cadillac. It was a cheesy fix but effective. This is the only car i have so i had no choice.Thank you for the input cliff i really do appreciate it.Ill be looking for a better core in the near future and go from there.

The core is fine.  I quick touch across the front over the belt sander and our .015" thicker top gasket and it will be a good repair.  The airhorn will re-conform to the main casting when tightened down.

I highly recommend upgrading the internals with one of our kits.  None of the over the counter kits come with the high flow Viton needle seat assembly anyhow, which is required for the big CID Caddy engines.....Cliff
