Q-jet for a Jeep
« on: September 07, 2012, 08:06:01 PM »
Well, I've built two Q-jets using Cliff's book, parts and advice and they've worked awsome! One for my 70 SS396 Chevelle and just this week ,my wife's 79 Pontiac TA 400.
I'm so stoked that I'm ready to tackle my biggest challenge...........a 1984 Jeep CJ-7 with a mildly built 304 AMC, 4-speed and 33" tires. I have spent untold hours and hours tuning the Edelbrock Performer 600cfm to operate good enough given the 3.31 gears,33" tires and little 304...........but I know the right Q-jet could run circles around the antique design of the Performer.
I have a good core Q-jet ( 17059507 ) that I'd like to use, but I'm unsure what recipe to use from the book as the AMC 304 is just a little guy. I've noticed the large main air bleeds in the carb and know I'll have some work to do to make it right for the little AMC, but I'm ready for the challenge ;D.
Any suggestions as to idle tube sizes and main air bleeds?Jets and rods etc? How about secondary air flap with the little 304? Also, I know I'll have to use an adapter because the manifold is a square bore intake, but I really don't have a choice there. Thanks in advance

 1973 AMC 304
401 AMC Police Interceptor cam advanced 4* ( approx. 13-14" vacuum at idle)
 Edelbrock dualplane intake
 Small tube headers
 4-speed trans
 33" tires
 3.31 ratio gears

It would help to know the compression ratio and cam spec's?  Seems pretty mild with that much vacuum at idle.

Nice carb for what you are doing.  I'd convert to electric choke, the large MAB's will be fine, but require different jets/metering rods.  SR kit, cam/spring, jets/rods, PP spring and E-choke should get it done.....Cliff

Thanks for the speedy reply Cliff

Compression is    8.0-1
Cam degreed out at 221* intake dur and
                                 224* exhaust
                                .458" lift intake lift
                                .468" lift exhaust

Hi Cliff, I went and checked some things before any mods and they were:

  Primary jets                 - 72
  Primary metering rods - 41K
  Secondary rods           - DP .688"

Just wondering if I should stick to recipe #2 and use approx. .440" secondary rods or does the fact it's only a 304 CID engine mean a change is in order? Thanks again

 Alan

.668 metering rods are pretty lean, it will be happier with smaller tipped rods....IMHO.....Cliff
