Carter any different from rochester Q-jet?

Hi - ive read many different variations on this. I am leaving to fetch my 77 camaro cross country and have to decide whether to take my carter or rochster tps carb. Ive spent the last week getting to know the carter.

One thing I noticed were the primary venturi rings (smallest ones). The carter's were awful looking, a terrible looking rough casting compared to the rochester which was precise, smooth and also had little divots opposite the brass outlet which prob iproves the draw over the mouth of the outlet. The carter was up to 1.5mm thick on top! - knowing the delicacy of airflow/turbulence I actually bought a miniature filing kit and filed the rings till they were sharper with a very even transition down (almost like those intake horns u see)... this i hope will reduce turbulence/shrouding in the primaries..

Im not sure if there are other things to be concerned about with the carter? can i (with correct tuning) attain the same results as an original? Everything else seems totally fine -

I bought doug roe's book and ruggles new one - a wealth of information but i either missed it, or am surprised there is no mention about these differences...

They were made to the same specs.  I suspect that you are looking at a heavily correded carburetor, or one that's been "commercially remanufactured".  They give them an acid bath and tumble them down a conveyer belt to smash the top of the venturis down as seen in the pic. 

Carter units are typically as clean as any Rochester in that area.

I do notice that the early Carter units aren't made quite as well (castings) as Rochesters.  Most anything produced in the later 60's will have "weak" threads and "soft" castings compared to their Rochester counterparts.....Cliff

cliff u the man. tx - i have a tps late 80's model and a manual choke. both castings start with 170 - the rochester seems to be better machined/in better nick. Dipped em both, sprayed all orifices out clean - i gotta choose which one to haul along cross country. Can i just ignore the tps stuff on a NA automatic 2004r or would i need to plug holes or something?

did i do an ok job with the filing or did i muck it up?

That is a "rough" looking casting.  Looks like it may have been commercially "remanufactured" at some point, idle tubes are driven in too deep as well.

CCC models can be set up to run without the electronics, but we typically don't mess with them, if we have something better to work with.....Cliff

so i could pop the elec model on a NA car and leave the stuff disconnected? its a 77 camaro so def no elec stuff happening there.. the carb should work as is without the electrical connections right?

I would install standard jets and run straight off them, in leiu of leaving the CCC stuff in place.

With the right main jets it will work flawlessly in all areas....Cliff
