So,if you had to choose?
« on: December 15, 2014, 06:29:00 PM »
Hello All,
I am in the process of building a Pontiac 1978 400 (XX block/6X heads) milder build to replace a 454 BBC currently residing between the fenders of my 1967 Firebird.  I have read Cliff's book on Q-Jets like 4 times and picked up a couple of Q-jets to choose from to rebuild.  I have a 17057274, probably the roughest, a 17058276 that looks like it may have been rebuilt at some time, and a 7045264 off of a 75 wagon, complete with the intake and all the brackets I plan to use as a guide.
Any thoughts?  Thanks in advance!  Patrick

 Welcome to CHP!

Either the 7274 or 8276 should be a great unit to modify for your application.

I AGREE WITH ETHAN 1, SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER, IF YOU HAVE A TURBO 350 OR OVERDRIVE TRANS YOU WILL NEED A CARB WITH THE RIGHT LINKAGE HOOKUP FOR THAT FEATURE. ELECTRIC CHOKES ARE GREAT. JUST REMEMBER THAT ALL Q-JETS ARE EMMISSIONS CARBS AND NEED TO BE RICHENED FOR PERFORMANCE. THE 6X HEADS WILL NEED SOME SERIOUS PORTING TO MAKE POWER ALSO. GOOD LUCK, AND USE CLIFFS KIT FOR THE REBUILD IF YOU ONLY WANT TO DO IT ONCE.

Thanks for the input!  I am definitely going to order the kit from here.  I am assuming the HP version is the way to go?
This ride should move, but I'm not racing it (except for the occasional stop light to stop light..)
Thanks! Patrick

Yes, go with the HP kit. Give Cliff a call and tell him what you need. :D
