Hello, I am new to this forum. Need help identifying this carb. I know it's from a 72 Pontiac f/b or GTO w/auto. but I am not sure what the last # is. Thanks, Jamie

I'd guess 7042276 or 7042278.

*6 is a 72 455 carb, 71 jets 43 rods CR secondary rod.
*8 is a 72 040 carb, 72 J, 46  rods, CS secondary.

Both are high altitude carbs so probably a bit lean calibrated. Verifying the secondaries would be a start, if they haven't been changed.

Sorry it took so long. Here is a better pic. Does anyone know if they would stamp the last number at a later time? Does anyone have a pic of one with a "6" stamped on it?

So after looking at it blown up, I am sure it is a six. Is this carb. as rare as the 0? I was told the 0 carb. is very rare. Is this the same application as the 0? Thanks

 I'm not sure what you are asking? As rare as the 0. What do you mean by "0"? I am sorry, just not sure what your asking.

Sorry, looking back at my posts they don't make much sense. I have been told that the 7042270 is pretty rare. From what I can tell the 7042276 is the same only calibrated for high altitude. Were these installed from the factory or dealer and did they stamp the last # later? The first numbers are very obvious but the last is hard to read. Thanks, Jamie

The 7042276 is not the same as the 7042270 Ram Air carburetor.  The 270 was used on the Pontiac 455 "HO" engines, which had round port high flow cylinder heads, and Ram Air.

The 7042276 was used on the base engine(s), not the High Output 455.

The Ram Air carb is extremely rare and valuable, the 276 carb is just a standand unit, probably worth about $25-75 as a core, depending on condition......Cliff
