Your comment on the manifold confuses me; dual ports that separate the primaries from the secondaries in the manifold? If this is the case, then you'd have to have two sets of intake runners to each cylinder, one for primary feed and one for secondary feed...

Is there any chance you can post pictures of this setup?


Hello. This is an inline six engine, so the intake hangs off the side of the head.  Offenhauser makes the dual port intake.  If you look into the runners where they bolt to head, they are divided top from bottom, about 33% for the primaries, and the remainder for the secondaries.  It is my understanding that v8's have something similar: the Dual Plane intake? 

If you go on ebay and search for ford 300 intake, surely there will be photos.

Cliff, thanks for walking me through all this.  One by one I'm getting the kinks worked out.  Can I change to an airhorn with solid nozzles?  Or can i change the nozzles by applying heat and pulling out?

I'll do some research. On a dual plane, the left side of the carb goes to 4 cylinders and the right side goes to the other 4. That is where I'm getting confused. What you've said explains it. Interesting!

Have you done a "tip-in" test with the APT screw?  Set it for 100-150rpm's increase when the choke flap it tipped in slightly.  This will be slightly lean, but should delivery good mileage

Cliff, when I do that test, do I raise the rpm to cruise level?

I'd set the rpms right at 2000 for the "tip-in" test.....Cliff

Choke question: I set it cold and the fast idle engages, but it dies several times b/f it will idle.  I have to let it warm up to 180* or when I give it gas it dies. Some times it pops thru carb. Ideas?

The pull-off is not correctly adjusted. 

It usually takes a few starts on a dead cold engine to dial them in.  When set correctly, it will fire right up on the fast idle and not die out.

The choke flap is opening too far if it dies out and spits up thru the carb (lean).  Fast idle speed on the high step of the cam could be to slow as well......Cliff
