I'll try retarding it further. Shouldn't I be hearing knocking or pinging, though?

Engine gets a lot more choppy when going any lower than 24 degrees at idle. It seems to run smoother and faster with the timing even more advanced at idle.

Since I didn't know the mechanical advance in the aftermarket HEI, I set the timing to 35 without vac at 3000 RPM. Put me at 20 at idle, 700 RPM. This, combined with the ATP all the way bottomed out, netted me 21 MPG on 88 miles of backroads and freeway this evening.

'72 Olds Cutlass Supreme 350 4bbl with a TH350 and a 2.56 posi rear. Stock low-comp engine and cam.
