Blocked off secondaries
« on: May 28, 2013, 11:21:48 AM »
Here's a good one for yea;
I have a 83 motorhome with a 454 chev engine.
Don't need to pass anyone, so I disconnected the secondaries and run only on the primaries.
Has all the power I need for a motorhome and don't need the secondaries to cut in...ever!
Only problem I'm having is a surging when I excellarate hard. Feels like not enough fuel.
No mechanical fuel pump, just electric back by the tank.
Float is set parallel with the body.
Carb is Q-jet correct for that engine and year.
Have all emissions removed.
Runs perfect with engine cold. Problem starts with engine warm.
Electric choke warmer and seems to be full off when engine is warm.
Any ideas what is causing the warm engine surging?

rochester used to make a Qjet with the back two barrels blocked off, a model 4MV, in the late 70s. You might be better off putting on one of those carbs then reworking yours . My 2 cents

Surging might be caused by a lean mixture ? Have you done Cliffs tip in procedure
To see where you're at?  Might need bigger jets or smaller metering rods.

WOT would be 100% on the jets/power tip, so rod and APT setting don't matter. Unless of course something is not letting the rods get to the power tips (bent rods, bent hangers, broken/missing power piston spring)

Sounds to me like a jet up would be needed.

how did you disconnect the secondaries? and did you put some sort of stop.seems like at hard excelleration its looking for more air. and it might be pulling the butterflies open a tad causing a slight lean mode. fwiw
