Check ball

Have my carb apart and I cant seem to get my check ball to seat. I read in Cliffs book that I should seat it by taking the old check ball, drop it in the hole and give it a few good taps. I've done this and filled above the new ball with carb cleaner several times and cant get it to stay full without slowly leaking out. I'm afraid if I hit it too much harder it will crack the casting. Any tips on what to do?

 Cliff will probably know. May try a punch with a rounded end. I have always done it the way Cliff shows in his book.

have you looked at the seating area under a magnifying light??? the seat needs to be pretty clean to seal effectively and and corrosion/dirt prevents this...tapping the ball gets the two surfaces to conform to maximize the seal but doesn't eliminate any crud...just my two cents

Went and got a new ball just in case my old one was deformed and got it so it will seal a lot better but it still will eventually leak out but extremely slowly, that was after beating on it pretty hard though I thought. I hope it will be good enough because I'm really afraid I'll crack it hitting it so hard. I cant see any crud in it, the carb is extremely clean.

Don't beat on the casting, it will break it.  I use a brass punch so it doesn't deform the steel ball, and light taps with a small machinists hammer.  I've see a few castings damaged beyond repair, but most will seal up fine with a bit of work.....Cliff
