Will this work properly?
« on: June 04, 2013, 11:40:24 PM »
Hi. My friend got an 1985 Olds Delta 88 with the tame 307, th200 and 2.73 rear.
Engine is computer controlled via the o2 sensor. Car is in excellent condition throughout.
We are in the process of replacing the 307 with a 403. Only block and heads are replaced. Everything from the 307 including aluminum intake, E4ME, egr, AIR-pump etc we are keeping. ( stock appearance).
We have had the heads milled slightly and put in an RV cam.
Question is; will the E4ME and the computer work in these new conditions? Or do I need to modify anything?

Judging from the fact that it's an "RV cam", it should be mild enough for the E4ME to work just fine. You may have to adjust rich and lean stops and the idle circuit. I'm actually going to be going through this exercise pretty soon, so I'm curious to hear more from you and the other members here on E4ME tuning.

I cant remember the exact cam, but it was chosen based on the low static compression with torque in mind.
I expect it to make the same vacuum level in idle.
I have rebuild and modified alot of Qjets, but only 1 was an E4M... The one on the engine in question actually. I haven't got much E4M experience.  We should get it up and running within a couple of weeks, I will let you know how it works.

There really isn't any such thing as an "RV" camshaft.  That term comes up frequently, typically associated with a few "generic" cam grinds used in small block Chevy engines.  The most popular is the 204/214/112 camshaft, and the term "RV" bleeds over into all sorts of discussions on camshaft choice.

In any case, provide the exact cam specs, and static compression ratio, and I can provide some help on how to set up the carburetor for what you are doing.

The computer controlled carburetor can be made to work fine for what you are doing, and keeping all the emission controls in place and operational.

Keep in mind that the ECM only controls part throttle fuel delivery.  Idle and heavy/full throttle are like the older Q-jets....Cliff

That cam should "purr" like a kitten in the little 307 engine, smooth idle, strong low end power, etc.  No idle system mod's would be required, IMHO.  Make sure to use the adjustable upper airbleed system for fine tuning once it's placed in service....Cliff

The little ( no good ) 307 is replaced with a 403 block. Stock appearance, but 6.6 liters instead of 5.0 :-)
I guess the cam will purr even more with more cubes? :-)
Once we run in the cam I will update the thread regarding how nice the M4ME works.

Pretty small cam for the 403, should idle with plenty of vacuum.  I'd leave the idle system stock for initial testing....Cliff
