Qjet for my Pontiac 461 Stroker build
« on: December 16, 2013, 04:29:46 PM »
Hey guys,

New to forum, looking for a little help finding the right qjet for my engine build. I know Cliff is back logged about 12 months so I was hoping to buy one setup or find a good one to rebuild myself. I found some info that I should be looking for the 800cfm qjet. If anyone can lead me in the right direction that would be great.

I'm building a Pontiac 461 stroker for street use with BP rotating assembly, 85cc KRE D-ports, RPM intake, cam is leaning towards 236/245 dur @ .050" lift .578"/.582" lift 112 lobe sep. Compression ratio 10.5:1 and should be around 500hp with the right carb.

Thanks for any help.

The 71-76 Buick Quadrajets were rated at 800 cfm.  71-74 were divorced choke 75-76 were hot air and can be converted to electric if a choke is needed.  The 76 year had best design probably.  I build a bunch of these and keep 800 cores in stock to build for my customers.  I know Pontiac had some larger quadrajets too, but seems most of those are pretty expensive.

I'll look into that.

Also forgot to mention the engine is going in a '68 GTO auto trans, no a/c. posi rear 3.36 gears. Thanks.

I may have found a starting point. Looks like more research reveals I should look for a 76 or later 800cfm Pontiac qjet. I'll start looking for the casting numbers. I'll check back for more details if anyone has any, thanks.

Just remembered I also need one that my lower ram air plan will clear. Not sure if certain ones wouldn't clear the pan or not. Thanks.

Looking at a 17056262. 1976 qjet for a 455. Just wondering if this is what I should be trying to get. Thanks.

Those are excellent units, and what I use on my own engine.  They do have a large front vent tube that will need a corresponding hole in the air cleaner base....Cliff

Thanks Cliff!

I bought the carb for $15 and will be needing a lot of work. I'll be calling you for a rebuild kit and parts.

Sounds great.  I use the same carb on my own 455, they are one of the very best starting points for what you are doing.....Cliff
