Alright, bought a 1977 Delta 88 a few months back, has the carb from the original Chevy VIN L 350. That same Q-jet was used on the GM goodwrench crate 350 dropped in back in '93, 'bout 260HP. The carb and transmission in my car are original, and have just over 225,000 miles on them.
The part number of the carb on this engine is 17057204
In short, the Q-jet does the following:
It does not idle right when cold, I have to bring it up to about 1500RPM and even then it tries to bog down, too much gas.
It will not run right if the car is not warmed up when it's cold, it's unsafe because it dies when I stop or take off. That is frankly, scary, I've had it die while turning in an intersection before. Because it's too wet too gun it in order it stop it from dieing, and I don't want to go Redneck Drift in the middle of Salem / Roanoke VA, or go battering ram someones car by accident.
It sometimes idles high in park, and only in park, like 1400-1800RPM, not 100% sure 'cause I don't have a tach.
When warm, it does open the secondaries properly at about 3/4ths of the pedal, and still delivers somewhat of a kick in the teeth.
The seals are turning into goo, ethanol is the stuff of nightmares.
And the choke has been replaced with a mechanical unit by the previous owners, I want this gone, I want an electric choke again.
So simply put, is the HP kit y'all sell suitable for a daily driver which will get flogged on a nearly daily basis at least once or twice on the interstate? Also, what about the choke, where might I source a replacement electric choke? Furthermore, the fuel pump on the car is an old Airtex Wells unit, should it be replaced when the carb is? I have documentation on work done to this car by many of the previous owners, but it's vague. Lastly, what other things should be addressed to ensure a rebuilt carb will do the best it can aside from vacuum leaks? I plan to get new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, adjust or replace the rockers and lifters to get rid of some lifter noise, and replace the valve cover seals sometime this summer.
