Best Q-Jet for 1968 Pontiac GTO 2bbl. to 4bbl. Conversion
(1/1)
1968 GTO Resto-Mod:
hey guys,
i am currently searching for a quadrajet carburetor for my resto-mod GTO project.
the motor is a 1968 pontiac XM 2bbl. 400 cid (0.030" over) with a 4bbl. spread bore intake manifold.
the car came stock with the TH400 automatic transmission but i've swapped it out for a muncie m21 4-speed manual.
based on the research i've already done it's evident there is no better carb choice for this application than a q-jet.
however, i'm not exactly sure which identification number i should be searching for...
would a 7028263 be a good bet?
any help you might be able to offer me would be great.
thanks!

I would look for a '77-'79 oldsmobile or Pontiac q-jet. the olds is way easier to find. But this is just my viewpoint (based on the various advantages of the newer castings) however if you need the look of the earlier casting, it's all up in the air, just try to stay away from the very early float/needle and seat carbs. FWIW

the 68 carb will work better with the factory air cleaner. you may require a new throttle cable and bracket for things to work as factory. you didn't say if the manifold was the stock cast iron unit. just remember a 68 carb is over 46 years olds and may have passed through a lot of hands. to get it as new will take a very good carb rebuilder. trying to save money here may cause a lot of problems down the road. good luck
