Quadrajet Problem Solving > Dialing in your rebuilt Quadrajet carburetor

Need a bit of help

(1/1)

oktorque:
I have another thread: Sucking fuel from boosters.  That is resolved.  I have a 17059272 with cliff's kit and using his #1 recipe.  But it ran terrible, surging, couldn't get it to idle, so I enlarged the idle tube to 44, the down ilde to 54, and the upper idle bleed to 72, lower idle bleed to 72.  Got idle, but when I put it in gear it clugs and I can't figure out why.  It has tremendous throttle response, but if I get on it it pings.

The float is set to about 3/8".  I'm using 72 jets with 41p rods.

oktorque:
Zero response.

Okay, I think this is two problems: Something is amiss with the idle circuit, and, I believe/guess, the engine is starving for fuel when I get on it.  Didn't ping with previous QJ.  Dizzy is freshly recurved, advance dialed in.

Solutions:  The only thing I can think of in idle circuit is a possible issue with the down restriction.  I removed them and installed Cliff's, but on one I could not get the remaining ring of the restriction out after drilling.  When I installed the new one maybe that ring became a hindrance?  That would account for why the mix screws adjust diff. with vacuum gauge?

I'll also try, for the power mode, changing the jets to a 74 with a 44 or 45p rod with taper.

77cruiser:
Why did you open the bleeds? If you think you are too lean, that's counter productive IMO.
What does your timing curve look like?
