quadrajet vent tubes

anyone know why some quadrajets have a slashed main vent tube? is there any benefit to slashing the tube? thanks

dougbert:
page 10 of the book shows a 1971 buick carb. Says it identifies as a 800 cfm carb if it also has a long curved arm on the throttle linkage. Don't know how widely that applies to other carbs.
