what quad to find in wrecking yard?
« on: March 09, 2015, 10:37:27 AM »
going to the scrap yard soon for a core to rebuild. are there ones to avoid? other than the computer controlled ones of course. are there ones that are better than the rest? I'm going to do a complete tear down and rebuild anyway, so I guess I'm asking what years to look at and if there is a number that is best.

it's for a basically stock '68 396 big block auto. hoping to find one that will also work on a mildly built 454 later. thought I'd ask as I'm still getting through your book for the second time. thought I remembered a section in which carbs to look for, but haven't found it yet.

76 to early 80's. Cliff does mention post 75 a number of times in his book.
Easier to mod and plenty out there.
E-choke is a good option.
I'll be Frank, Haven't a clue when it comes to setting up a carburetor.

I agree with what 58 said and would add, you want to find one with a front pull off.  Some of the late 70's/80's only used the rear pull off.

Other than that, look for the fuel inlet location you want (front or side) and the throttle arm you need.
