using 17084222 on 68 396 325 hp
« on: October 18, 2015, 09:57:03 AM »
any issue with using this carb on a big block? engine is basically factory 325 hp, with mild rv cam. do not know cam specs. I do have orig. carb for this engine, but its going to get rebuilt eventually. I have this other carb, it needs a rebuild as well, but this one I can do. my question is if this will work as it is, or will I need to change jets, rods, etc? any other mods required please let me know. I do have cliffs book, but jstill reading it. car was originally hot air choke, but I don't mind using electric until I get original finished. this is just so I can drive car until then.

 Cannot find that carb number, at least on the Internet. I will have to check my manuals, but is that a CCC Qjet?

has 70 promary jet, can't make out number on primary rods, but they measure .035" tips and .050" at biggest part of taper. haven't measured idle tubes or dcr yet. h hanger and DR secondary rods.

It will work fine on that application with minor modifications.

When you get time, call the shop, we can supply the tuning and rebuild parts to get it up to par for what you are doing.

If using the original intake, we also have some ideas on using the original factory steel shim and gaskets required, etc....Cliff

OK, hope this is going to make sense. I called the shop and spoke to someone, however i didnt catch the name. regardless, he was quite helpful, i was just a little under prepared. the spcs on the 17082224 are: idle tubes-0.035",DCR-0.051",upper idle air bleed-0.068,lower idle air bleed 0.077", idle discharge holes 0.063",primary jet 70, primary rod 51M, secondary rod-DR hanger-H, main air bleed-0.087", bypass air-0.054". I wrote down all recomendations given to me, except for the size of idle air bleeds, and which hanger to use.
recommendations were, idle tubes-0.036", DCR-0.055", idle discharge- 0.086", primary jet-73, secondary rod- AX and bypass air 0.100".
now the fun part. I have the original carb in pieces in a box, and it had CV rods on an L hanger. is this the correct setup for that carb, or could it be from a 7040250? I ask this because the car has the 7040250 on it now, but it leaks like crazy last time we started the car(15 years ago+-). original carb apparently did the same. the 7040250 has AX rods on a T hanger. wondering if those may have come from the original carb, and my dad switched them years ago. he doesnt remember. Also i do not have ant primary jets with original, so im hoping he may have put them in the replacement carb. can anybody tell me what size either carb had? I havent had a chance to open up the 7040250 carb yet to see whats in there. once i get the hanger and idle air bleed info, ill go ahead and order a kit from cliff. thx.
