fuel needle seat
« on: April 17, 2016, 05:32:42 PM »
Hi. I have a basic question. Disassembling the q-jet to put a Cliff's kit in. It's a 17059253 for Olds 403 in a 79 TA. I pulled the old fuel needle seat and washer, and looking at the hole in the carb body, it looks like there's a steel washer still around the top edge of the hole, as if someone left an old washer in when the last seat with washer was installed. But I'm not sure if it is another washer. I've tried using a pick to catch the inside edge to see if it will pry out, but I haven't been able to catch an edge yet. So, I looked inside another similar APT q-jet I have from a 76 GP, and pulled the needle seat and washer from it. It has the same ring around the hole that looks similar to a steel washer. In both carbs, the ring looks like darker metal than the carb body metal, like a steel seat washer does, which is what made me wonder if they had been double-washered in the past, and maybe the first one is stuck there. It makes a ledge at the top of the hole. I've looked as close as I can with a light and magnifying glass but I can't tell. So, my question is whether this is a steel washer or is it just a ledge cast into the top of the hole, and the way it's supposed to look like after pulling out the old seat and washer? I don't want to get more vigorous on it without knowing if it's a steel washer or just part of the hole. Here are a couple pics. It's the larger diameter ring at the top of the hole. Thanks!:

Sometimes the coating from the gasket leaves a fine black film on the seating surface.  Nothing really to worry about.

There are times when the old gasket sticks in place with a similar appearance, but if you install two gaskets it's pretty obvious by how far off the float is and very difficult to set the float height without bending quite a ways.....Cliff

Hi Cliff. Yes, it must be that the surface just gets blackened from the black gasket washer. Because it also has a "step" there, it makes it look like another washer. But I see now that it's just a ledge around the hole, which has to be smooth for the gasket washer to seal on it. Thanks for the verification! I can finish it up now  :) .
