Hello All---1st time user so bear with me. I am attempting to rebuild my quadrajet #7029270 and am not sure which recipe to try to follow. I purchased this carb. 8 years ago from a reputed quadrajet rebuilder. Once installed I could not get a satisfactory idle, always seemed extremely rich and would fume you out of the garage in a matter of minutes. It had a very bad hesitation off idle to part throttle. Once going when you layed into it it would really pull but would fog the neighborhood out from all the black smoke. After many weeks of frustration I pulled it and installed an edlebrock 750 vac. sec. carb, tuned it for my application and it ran great from then on. I am now wanting to return it to stock appearance so am going to rebuild the quadrajet. After purchasing Cliffs' book and reading it many times, I have disassembled my carb and have found the following measurements on everything:
Idle tubes--.032, Idle down channel--.060, Upper idle air bleeds--.050, Lower idle air bleeds--.070, Idle bypass air (allready present)--.070, Holes under idle mix. screw--.110, Holes drilled in primary throttle plates--.125, Main jet--.070, Main metering rod--Tip:.026 Max taper:.043, Air bleed in air horn--.070, Air bleed in main body--.070, Accel. discharge hole--.028, Fuel inlet seat--.135, Enrichment well restriction--.035, secondary enrichment restriction--.043, Secondary flaps have the huge slot cut into them in line with the restriction holes, Secondary emulsion tubes--.030, Secondary Hanger--O, Sec. metering rods--CH, air flap distance set at 1.340. I appologize for the long post, but not sure what recipe I should follow as the numbers seem all over the place. The engine in question is a Pontiac 455 with 71 400 , 96 cc heads giving 9.5:1 compression. Cam is crower 231/240 @.050 duration, 470 lift. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I plan to order a kit from Cliff, but need to know what direction to go before ordering. I will keep this shorter next time. Thanks again!
