Messed up primary throttle shaft...

I started rebuilding my Qjet tonight.  Its a 17056264 for a 76 Trans Am.  The thing is date coded so close that I just had to buy it. 

But anyway, I was trying to remove the plates from the primaries, when ALL FOUR screws broke off inside the throttle shaft.  That's my luck, so I removed the throttle shaft (it needs the brass bushings anyway) and tried to drill and remove the broken screws.  I messed it up pretty bad in doing so.

So.... where do I get get a new throttle shaft, and how to remove the linkages from the old one, to put them on the new one?

We see this a LOT here in the shop, and can remove the broken off screws as we're pretty good at it. 

They are difficult to drill out and stay on center as you found out, it takes special procedures and very good drill bits to be successful at that deal.

Removing the linkage from the end of the shaft requires that you grind off the staked portion then drive or press out the shaft, then install a different one.  No new ones available that I know of, so it will need to come from another used one, 1975 or newer style carb (longer than the older style).

Good news is that we may have a few of those throttle shafts in the shop with the linkage already on them.  Hopefully you got one of our kits for the rebuild as well.  Our kits contain parts far superior to what others are offering, and our accelerator pump seal has a lifetime warranty on it.....Cliff

I would gladly order another fully assembled shaft/linkage.  How does one do that?

Also, how can I remove the same screws from the secondaries without breaking them?  I've tried soaking them in PB blaster and working the screws back and forth.  Lot of good that did.

You have to grind the ends off that are sticking through the shaft because the ends are staked. Use a file or die grinder.

Yeah...  just got off the phone with CHP.  They said the same thing.  It really would have been nice if that information had been included in the Qjet rebuild book.  Either that or it is there and I simply missed it.

Uhm anyway, I'm just going to get a whole new throttle shaft assy (linkage included).  The guys at CHP are checking if they have one.

There is a nice picture and caption on page 64 explaining how to remove throttle shaft screws.

The instructions in our bushing installation kit also explain in detail how to remove the staked portion of the throttle shaft screws so they will come out without twisting them off.

We're going to look for a replacement throttle shaft today......Cliff

Teehee yup, sure enough it's there.  I don't know why I panic about little things. 

My main problem is that I try to go TOO FAST.  LoL impatience and not enough time in the day has a lot to do with that.
