068 cam

[68 Firebird]

This is my first post here so please bear with me

i have a 1968 firebird with a 400 running 16 heads, with 10.75 compression.
auto trans with 3.08 rear gearing

currently running an edelbrock #2157 cam with 110 LSA and not pleased with idle characteristics

was thinking of install the crane blueprinted copy of the 068 and feel the wider LSA of 115.5
would work better for my setup.

I have rebuilt the carb myself to recipe #1(core and parts from cliff's) and feel carb func well.
starts and runs much better than with reman unit and better control with mix screws. 
cliff's book was excellent and know i can not only name parts in carb but i have and understanding of what they do and how they interact.  learned more in 2 weeks then in the last 10 years.


anyone else try that cam??

The original Melling 068 grinds are still in production, available over the counter at NAPA and most other Auto Parts stores.

I don't use or recomend any copies of those cams, as the manufacturer's often reduce seat to seat timing, and make other slight changes to them which can reduce overlap, and increase cylinder pressure(s).....Cliff

by the way i just wanted to say thankyou for the quadrajet core and rebuildkit
it is coming along very nice and recipe#1 has yielded excellent results.

1 dumb question is when i start the engine(cold) and let it run on the fast
idle cam for let's say 30 to 45 seconds and then tap gas pedal the rpm's
kick down to lets say 650 and then they increase to 725(curb idle) after
engine is warm.  during the warmed period the motor runs a little rough.

would that be normal or do i need to look at something in the choke area.

If you have fine tuned the idle mixture screws on a fully warmed up engine, normal to have it idle slower and rougher till it's fully warmed up.....Cliff
