7043244 Use With 67 Firebird 400?
« on: July 23, 2018, 07:28:24 AM »
Hello All,

First post and recent new owner of a 67 Firebird 400 (TH 400 trans).

It's currently fitted with an Edelbrock 1406 carb fitted by the PO and uses an adaptor plate with the original Pontiac intake manifold. The car was fully restored approx 10 years ago and has not been used much since, v'clean condition.

The problem is, the carb seems to not have been fully dialed in.  The butterflies don't fully open at full throttle (adjustment is maxed out), the throttle linkage on the carb doesn't contact the kick down switch, the car seems to run 'flat', no real kick in the pants when gunned and it burns a LOT of fuel.

Here's my question, rather than taking the time/effort of dialing in the Edelbrock, I could just replace with a quadrajet.  I have the option to purchase a quadrajet core in decent condition (7043244) with mechanical choke.  Is this a good candidate unit (with the relevant Cliffs rebuild kit) unit to use as a replacement?

Thanks in advance.  Guy

Nice unit but the throttle linkage on those doesn't provide a location for the return spring rear of the carburetor and a shorter fuel filter housing will be needed for a better fit for a factory fuel line......Cliff

Thanks Cliff, appreciate the speedy response!

The car doesn't currently have the factory fuel line to the carb.  PO fitted an electric fuel pump in place of the mechanical, so connection shouldn't be an issue.

Are you aware of any successful fixes out there for the spring placement?  I'm not looking to have a period correct show car, just a fun cruiser.

Thanks again.  Guy

An early Pontiac carb would be a better choice,  fuel line, vacuum lines, choke hook-up, return spring, etc.

I'd look for a 69-70 Pontiac carb, any "grocery getter" version is fine, they are excellent units and everything fits.

If you just have to have the Buick 350 carb it can be outfitted with a different throttle shaft that doesn't interfere with the air cleaner base and will have a return spring hook-up to the rear......Cliff

Thanks Cliff, points all noted.

I'll look for a more suitable candidate and get back in touch re build kit and tune.

Appreciate your help.  Guy
