another float level question

Mr.Pontiac:
I set my float level at 1/4 without gasket on top of bowl about 1/2 back from center of carb. some guys are saying set float with gasket intact?? witch one is correct??

Macadoo:
All the literature I've read, including my original Oldsmobile CSM (chassis service manual) instructs not to use gasket.
