Can I use '79 350 Chevy truck QJet on 76 Cad Eldorado 500ci?
« on: January 08, 2019, 09:58:07 AM »
We have 76 Cadillac Eldorado 500ci.
Q-Jet needs rebuilding - (number is 17056230)
THE CAR IS IN ANOTHER STATE, so I don't have it in front of me.

Since I am out of state, I'd like to rebuild a QJet that I have here and then swap it over on the Caddy when I get to the car in a few months.
It is a Carter Q-Jet 17059205 - Thanks to your decoding method, this is for a 1979 Chevy 350 manual trans.
I found a similar 17059205 on EBay showing that this was for a 1979 Chevy 350ci Truck.

QUESTION:  Would this 350ci truck QJet swap over to the Caddy 500ci engine (assuming I transfer over the linkage and choke)?
Would anything need to be changed internally for the "79 Chevy truck 350ci" carb to work on the Caddy 500ci?
Aren't all QJets either 750 or 800cfm?
Thanks - regrets about my basic ignorance about this carb.

It will physically bolt down to the intake but you will find many minor differences and it is not calibrated anything close to the big Caddy unit being delivered on a little emission years truck engine.

I would spend the time and funds on the original instead.......Cliff

Thanks Cliff.
Can I use the body of the 17059205 and swap the jets, etc., over?
This way I can clean up the passageways and then just swap pieces from the dirty 17056230.

Or are there differences in the bodies?
Thanks for any further info.

No, it is not the same type of carburetor so very few parts interchange.

I would get one of our SR rebuild kits for the Caddy carburetor and spend the time on that unit.  It is calibrated exactly for the application, and everything is a perfect fit.

Adding to that every Quadrajet part number sports and exact calibration for the application it was originally used on.

We ALWAYS try to use the original unit unless it is missing or damaged.  Even when I'm building them and find damaged components, like a cracked main casting for example, I'll try to locate the same part number in the core pile to use as a replacement.  There are small differences in the castings that go beyond which jets and metering rods they used, same with the baseplates and airhorns, so it is always best when working with stock applications to use the original carburetor and all of it's components when possible.......Cliff
