4MV Marine swap
jphillips:
Repowering my boat after 40 years. Original Crusader SBC's 305 with Quad 7028282's. Repower will be 305's all stock with the exception of marine HEI's. After 40 years od salty air and many rebuilds the carbs need replacing. I found two nice 17059286 Quads that look to be great for rebuilds. I purchased from Cliff rebuild kits and I'm breaking down the carbs and comparing differences between the two. The 17059286's were used on OMC SBC's and #1- the 17059286 has only two brass tubes in the air horn vs four and #2-the secondary metering rods in the original 7028282 are AV and the 17059286 are CM. My question is do these differences need to be addressed or are the newer Quads good to go with rebuilding as they sit? Any input would be appreciated. Not looking for any more performance just the reliability the old Quads gave me.
Thanks JP

I would not modify/tune them in any way. Completely/correctly rebuild them paying very close attention to float height, metering rod hanger arms level and exactly even, and idle tubes not blocked or plugged up with crud (common problem with Marine units).
Put them in service, evaluate the performance at every level, and go back and make adjustments if/as needed.
You may find slightly smaller secondary metering rods a nice improvement. I've tuned quite a few Marine units in recent years on the water making full throttle runs and most have responded nicely to slightly smaller secondary metering rods on this new fuel.
Some Marine models didn't use POE and it won't be a problem provided the choke pull-off isn't too quick (restriction in the inlet too large) and you have adequate spring tension for the secondary air flaps.......Cliff

Cliff, thank for the rebuild kits and advice. I have finished the rebuilds and they look great! Hope to get my long blocks from machine shop soon and live test them. I do have one more question. On the air horn (drivers side) where the vacuum port for dist is located is drilled out about an 1 1/4" deep and has no pressed fitting in it for vacuum hose. It is a marine carb so it should not be used. In your book on page #49 per the pic my carbs do not have slot cut so can I assume the ported vacuum is not in service on these cabs? Or do I need to tap and plug it?
Thank You

Marine castings are drilled in the correct location but there is not supply from the baseplate so no need to plug the hole......Cliff

I owned a boat repair shop, and consider myself a competent boat mechanic. To my knowledge, there are NO MARINE HEI DISTRIBUTORS!!
Putting any ignition components on a boat that are NOT COAST GUARD APPROVED, is not only dumb but also potentially DEADLY!!!!
Now, I may be out of the loop but, I am not aware of any Coast Guard approved HEI distributors.
It's a bummer, but I think it is a FACT.
DON'T TURN YOUR BOAT INTO A BOMB!!!!
USE ONLY COAST GUARD APPROVED ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS IN YOUR BOAT!!
