17085226 2645 HLY
« on: March 09, 2024, 09:43:21 AM »
Decided to talk the old carb that was on my 1977 GMC C-15 heavy duty pickup with the stock 350 off the shelf and attempt a rebuild.  It’s a new endeavor for me and so would appreciate any recommendations/suggestions as I get started. If I’ve got it right it looks as if it’s a 1985 without any electronics (?). Thanks

Correct, it is not electronic. Those 80s truck carbs work quite well.
Do you have Cliffs Q-jet book?

The M4MED 17085226 has an electric choke element and a dual capacity pump valve assembly package and a dual capacity pump electric solenoid package.

No showstopper but there are better units w/o the dual capacity pump system.

I'd recommend one of my rebuild kits.  They are the most complete/correct in this industry and the ONLY kit out there with a lifetime warranty on the accl pump in any of this new fuel......

Can you tell me which kit you’d recommend?  Also, is it possible to put an electric choke on that unit?  The original set up was the kind that comes off the manifold with the heat stove?

I should have had an electric choke. Did somebody cobble something together?

Not sure. I’m not the original owner but would say that is what happened.

An electric choke will drop right in, no problem. Other than being ugly the dual shot solenoid
and valve are harmless. Just dont wire it up.

WHOH, HOLD IT, STOP, Something is horribly wrong with this picture.
Choke is not even close. I dont like the sandblasted finish and the phillip
head bowl screws either. Open hole in top. No telling whats been done inside.
At this point I would reccomend finding a better carb.

Dont mean to sound discouraging but....

Frankencarb for sure.  When i took it off after first buying the truck, I knew why the kid said it “didn’t run very well”. The question remains, is it worth a little money and time to rebuild it?  You all can let me know your thoughts.

You can find an unmolested original 1979-1984 Chevy Truck unit for peanuts that will be easier/cheaper to modify for your use.
And it will adopt an electric choke to make it independent of intake used.
