Did you purchase a genuine Heli-Coil brand kit, or something else?....

I've taken taps to the belt sander in order to get threads "deeper" I would guess your Heilcoil tap was not cheap though.

So it's not a genuine Heli-Coil tap?

The tap in my Heli-Coil kit is "bottom style", no issues.

There is a company that offers the both the 7/8"-20 and 1"-20 taps, pretty sure they are called "Recoil".

Those taps will not work well if at all.  I bought one for 1"-20 threads and it was useless.  Had to source out a genuine Heli-Coil tap and it works fine.....FWIW.....Cliff
