Which carb to rebuild?
« on: April 02, 2020, 04:05:30 PM »
Have two Quadrajets, both seem to be in decent shape. I have one 17056244 from 1976 with a single choke pull off and non-electric choke and I have one 17059272 from 1979 that has an electric choke and two vacuum choke pull off's.

I'm a beginner, so be gentle!  I've been through Cliff's book several times but am not yet confident.

Hi there Widetrack and welcome !  Both units are dual main air bleeds 800 cfm units.  Both very good starting points.  The 79 is a Pontiac and the 76 is a Buick.

I personally built a 17059272 myself for my girlfriend's 326 Firebird.  Runs like a champ.  I've added idle air by pass because it did not have any from the factory, no big deal.  I think, not sure, that there is no large vacuum port in the front, those 301 pontiac engines came with a spacer so make sure it can be made to work with your set up.

   Frank.

Thanks Frank,

Will keep reading the Cliff book and take lots of pics as I take them apart!  Cliff has one of my carbs that he's doing, but I want to try one on my own for the hell of it.

Indeed!  And a DETROIT Pontiac guy......Although I have been on Widetrack Drive in Pontiac from time to time when my dear old dad used to take me to Lions games.

Those carbs (when finished) are pretty much equal from a performance standpoint.

The 272 will need a little more work than the 244 but not much,  It needs the stop ground down some on the secondary airflap shape for more flap open angle and solid secondary fuel nozzles.

They tune a little different, airbleed sizes aren't the same but otherwise the same basic main casting and airhorn......Cliff
