Baylinerchuck:
Thanks for the advice sir. Yes the OEM carb is gloss black. Never saw a painted carb on a car, but I guess the marine environment can be pretty harsh.

I’ll also get the plug kit so I have the smaller plugs. I want to be 100% those passages are clear under the primary jets. They are definitely blocked now. Was having trouble finding parts until a fellow boater on the iBoats forum recommended this site. Thanks for the help.

tayto:
i would definitely pull the idle tubes. i did a marine carb last year and both were plugged. one took some soaking and vigorous poking with 0.030" stainless lockwire to clear it. i've had good luck with using a propane torch and drywall screw for removal. I actually saw one of cliff's competitors selling threaded idle tubes which would make removal and future cleaning not a butt clinching experience

Baylinerchuck:
Thanks @tayto

I blew carb cleaner and compressed air through that circuit and it seems clear. I’ll get a better look when I drill the Front plugs, primary well, to clear that obstruction. Getting those idle tubes out looks like a total PITA, and I’d rather avoid that.

I placed my order for the marine rebuild kit as well as the plug kit. I also included the s/n of the carb in case there is something else I should consider.

I’m thankful to have been directed to this site with this amount of knowledge.

Cliff Ruggles:
I try to avoid pulling idle tubes from Marine carburetors as they don't have much room to drive the tubes down without destroying the ends of them.  In most cases I can run a .024" piece of spring wire thru them to clean them out in place.

When I do find myself having to pull them I drill them with a .089" drill bit just deep enough to engage a drywall screw and warm the casting next to them for about 30 seconds with a propane torch.  They come out easily at that point.

I then remove the collars from the tubes and clean up the end where they were drilled and drive the collars back on them.  They work fine even though you've shortened them up just a tad.......Cliff
