Accelerator pop check ball

old cars:
17087211 carburetor has a spring over the check ball. Never seen this before. Carb looks clean and original. Idle mixture screws haven't been accessed yet. Doesn't look to ever been apart before.  see pics

Someone added it at some point.  Not really a bad idea, but the check ball is well below the fuel level in the bowl and pretty good column of fuel above it on the discharge side.......
