Secondary Hanger?
« on: October 19, 2010, 01:59:09 AM »
Just installed a new choke pull-off,
rate is at 2 seconds. Problem is the secondaries,
I bog out when floored. If I slowly accelerate there is no bog,
only bogs when secondaries first open. I think its lean when
the secondaries first open, should I bend the hanger up, or
get different rods. My spring tension is light on the air flap,
I tried making it tighter but the bog was still there.
It can also make coughing sound as secondaries open.
Is it running rich, or lean when the sec. open & bogs out?

The POE system needs to be working correctly to help overcome a lean condition when the secondaries first open.

I would try raising the metering rods as well with a taller hanger or carefully bending the stock one.

The airflaps need to be tuned for smooth transition as well, too fast will almost always cause a lean conditions, bog/hesitation/stumble, etc....Cliff

Thank you, I will try to bend the hanger up carefully, & buy shorter rods.
Air flap; adjusted spring tighter it did not improve the bog , & at high rpm it closed the
air flap too soon once it ran out of pressure to hold it open.
note: After the initial bog from the sec. the car does accelerate correctly.
I will report my results soon.

POE? Secondary POE Restriction – Air horn:
0.058” is this correct?
noted choke pull-off is actually 1.5 sec. for complete  extension.

The POE system is like an accl pump, it adds fuel to help prevent stumble/hesitation/bog as the huge secondaries first open.  The system is described in our book.

If it's fine after the initial troubles, then look closely at the pull-off, flap spring tension, POE exit hole location, and link up to the secondary airflaps.  The pull-off should hold the flaps tightly shut at idle or high vacuum.

Hanger height and the metering rods play a role here as well.  Some metering rods have a pretty "fat" upper section, and if too deep in the fixed jets can create a lean condition when the secondaries first open.....Cliff

Thanks cliff,
 today i made new adjustments,
Air flap at 1/2 from zero tension.
removed & bent hanger up slightly made a trace to measure difference.
increased accel pump rod travel for larger shot.
Tested pull off at idle held tight and closed, turn off
car and it open like a vacuum drop. Now Im
going to test drive it, be back with report.

After adjustments came back, &  no more
bog, popping or lag when floored as secondary open
up. Thank you Cliff, bending the hanger up really
helped my momentary lean condition as sec open.
I also think increasing my accel pump shot
helped I drilled a higher hole in the linkage
for a larger shot of fuel i could see the increase of
fuel in the shot after drilling.
Forgot to mention using AU rods & M hanger (going to buy DA rods)
most likely stock like every thing on my Toronado.
Ah Toronado's are the best...

The primary side accellerator pump is also a KEY player in secondary transition, which I forgot to mention earlier.  It is still putting fuel into the engine when the huge secondaries open quickly.

I cured quite a few secondary transition problems over the years by installing one of our modern HP accellerator pump assemblies.  They improve pumping efficiency, especially on the older carburetors with the old style pumps that lacked the garter spring and better springs.

If you don't have one, I'd get one, they are available directly off the website separetely from our kits.....Cliff

Your right mine has no garter spring,
& I've been meaning to order the HP
pump + DA rods. Eliminated problem with my modification
but not as well as it could with correct parts.
Today Im going to decrease spring tension
to 1/8 turn, because they seem to close to early
with 1/2 turn at high speed vacuum drops & the spring
pulls them closed too early (thats what it sounds & feels like).

Thank you Cliff, it's incredibly educational & valuable to get your insight.\
My car would be a laughed at dog without your help.
