Quadrajet Problem Solving > Diagnose a Quadrajet carburetor problem
Main air bleed question?
slicer87:
Well my problem is that the engine will not run under 1K without shuting right down. I read online that missing air bleed restrictors can do this and that many carb rebuilding shop remove the restrictors. My carb was not rebuilt by Cliff, I had a local shop rebuild it which was a mistake.

I overhauled one of these units some years back and could not get it to idle either. I finally took it to a shop and they adj it & got it to run great. I believe the procedure calls for a dwell meter attached to the green? lead coming from the wire harness in front of the carb. Does the MC solenoid click when running? This is about all I know about these units..
slicer87:
The dwell is off and I checked for vacuum leaks and there are none. The IAB and mix needles have no effect on the dwell. That is why I am thinking the guy goofed something up.
Cliff Ruggles:
Those models use large MAB's. However, this has nothing to do with the idle quality, or how much idle fuel is available to the mixture screws.
The idle system is adj via the upper idle airbleed adj in the airhorn, in addition to the idle mixture screws in the baseplate.
If you can't bring it within range using both adjustments, it needs to be take apart to find out why?.....Cliff
slicer87:
Then I am guessing it is the idle tubes then. Cliff the idle tubes you sell do they need to be drilled out to match the old tubes in the carb?
