Symptoms of a warped bowl
« on: October 16, 2025, 11:45:50 AM »
I've got an issue that has been stumping me. On a 17058204 and a 17057231 I've noticed that if you manually open the air valve while the engine is idling, it acts like it has a vacuum leak, the engine begins to slow, and if you continue to hold the air valve open, it will eventually stall.

Initially I thought i had a problem with the secondary throttle blades not sealing in the bores, but I checked another carb that does not have this problem and it's secondary blades fit exactly the same as the 2 carbs i have a problem with.

So i took a straight edge to them and the bowls are warped, one has a  .025" gap at the center next to the secondary wells, the other has a  .017" gap.
I checked the gaskets on each, and the texture on the gaskets where they are making good contact, ( the 4 corners and around the edges), is flattened out as you would expect, however near the center of the carb the texture is untouched.

Is there any fix for these bowls? Can you straighten them out somehow, and if so, what do you have to do so you don't ruin it?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

 Rick

I built a jig for both main bodies and airhorns.
Straightens them out nice with no damage.

So how exactly do you use it, your pictures don't really tell much. Maybe a picture of the top without a carb on it?
I'm guessing it has to have a couple of reliefs for the venturis so they don't get bent.

I have it at work right now. Pics later. Its machined so that you can sandwich the main body with 2 plates and use it in the oven. I start with just snugging up then tighter once I get it up to about 280.
One plate is machined to bolt the airhorn to using the factory mount holes and I also use a couple well placed Kant Twist clamps. Same procedure in the oven. Heat up. Torque. Let cool over night in oven.
Airhorn does not need to be stripped down.

Previous pics were to show results I het from straightening. These show a carb I am working on that is disassembled, but I can flatten them with airhorn together and main body somewhat together.

Pretty slick. So how thick are the plates? From the pictures I'm guessing about 1.25".

UPDATE:

Well I figured out what was going on. I screwed up, I had tied the secondaries closed for WOT testing but I didn't notice that the wire I used didn't let the secondaries close completely. I wrapped it around the lockout lever and wedged it between the lever and base plate which forced the throttle open slightly.
Of course when I pulled the carb i took off the wire, so when inspecting it nothing looked wrong. Oops!
That was a waste of a day.
