Carburetor build
« on: March 06, 2025, 11:55:14 AM »
I have a Rochester quadrajet carburetor #17056540 that I would like to rebuild and modify to put on my 1980 GMC 1 ton dual four wheel drive truck it has a standard four-speed with a 454 GMC truck motor, the motor very strong I think it has a RV cam in it but other than that I'm assuming it's all standard compression ratio, I believe it's a 1975 or 1974 I have yet to figure that out but I'm looking for recommendations on how to rebuild this carburetor so that it will run this engine strongly what size Jets what size metering rods what idle down channels bypass air, if someone could kindly guide me in the right direction I do have cliffs book on rebuilding carburetors and I have done a couple with this book over the years that have been very successful but now I am just seeking ideas.
Thank you,
Paul

Paul,

If you can get the engine code off the front of the block I can tell you what year and application it's out of if you're interested. It should be stamped on a flat pad just above the timing cover if memory serves, and it should be either a 2 or 3 letter code depending on the year.

I'm going to be doing a carb for a 78 454 I'm gonna install in a 64 1 ton dually in the near future so I'm interested in how you get along with yours.
I don't have the specs for your carb, but I would suspect that it would be very similar to the carb I'm going to use.
I don't remember the number right now, I'd have to look at it again, but if nobody can provide you with the information, I can give you what I've been given for mine.

It’s a 1976 Buick 455 casting,  but you might not want to use that core if it does not have the APT access  in the airlid…it probably has the dreaded third primary rod set up design.

There seems to be a little round plug in the top of the air horn where that apt would be accessed.

Aside from the goofy throttle arm and front inlet good choice for what you are doing.  Needs a little help in a few places.  I can supply a complete rebuild kit and tuning parts to set the carburetor up for the 454 truck application.  I would also convert it to electric choke, and make sure to check play at the primary throttle shaft it may need bushings installed during the rebuild....

Cliff,
I will find out what year the engine is and then write you for the rebuild components.
Thank you

 Paul,
I realized I gave you the wrong location for the engine code on your big block. It's on the right side of the block just above the water pump mounting at the base of the head, there's a small lip or ledge it's stamped into, the same as the small block.  I apologize for that.
The code you're looking for should be a 3 letter sequence, something like TRU, TRS, or similar if it's an early 70's big block. Once you have it, I can pinpoint the year and size of the truck it came from.
