Computer controlled carb has only one accelerator pump discharge nozzle drilled.
birdman:
I recently discovered the computer controlled carb on my wife's 1981 Firebird Esprit has only the drivers side accelerator pump discharge hole drilled, no hole in passengers side primary bore. The passages are there in the main body and air horn but it was never drilled into the primary bore area of the airhorn. Has anyone seen this? I know GM was concerned about fuel economy and emission at that time. Is it possible it was designed that way or was it manufacturing mistake? We have driven the car a few thousand miles since we purchased it and it runs ok. The carb # is 17081270 and original to the car as far as i know. Any thoughts?
Kenth:
Pictures?
What size is the drivers side accelerator pump discharge hole?
birdman:
The hole into the primary bore is .070. The inner/restriction section of the hole measures about .026. Looks to be around the same size as Q-jets with both discharge holes when compared to other carbs i have. I will try to get a picture or two.
Mudsport96:
I would think that this was a quality control error. I know that the hp was low those years, but feeding only one side with the accelerator pump would cause a huge lean stumble.
birdman:
Surprisingly the drivability isn't that bad, very slight hesitation at throttle tip in at lower speeds. The original owner drove the car for 67000 miles like this. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but i thought for some reason they used a open plenum/single plane intake manifold on these engines, I'm guessing that allowed it run acceptable vs a normal stock dual plane intake where 4 cylinder would be very lean.
I'm going to drill out the missing passages and see how it runs.
