Marine fuel filter question....

(1/1)

LouC:
Finishing up with a rebuild using Cliff's kit on my marine Quadrajet and I have a couple of questions, I know how the marine filter goes with the spring going in first, and the open end of the filter facing the fuel line. For the housing nut, do you use the white plastic gasket, or the dark colored one? Also, on some instruction sheets I have seen reference for a seal that goes between the filter itself and the filter housing nut, is this necessary?
Thanks!

Cliff Ruggles:
Most Marine carburetors use the black gasket on the fuel filter housing.

You do NOT need a gasket inside the fuel filter housing for the Marine fuel filter.  It will seal nicely on the machined surface.  Matter of fact those gaskets can fail and start shredding tiny parts of paper into the carburetor and why I don't supply them in my kits......

LouC:
Thanks I also checked the shop manual for this engine and they don't show one either, these engines have the big water separating fuel filter which should catch most of what would cause trouble anyway.

Cliff Ruggles:
I've seen LOTS of folks install a gasket there, problem is that those gaskets are smaller in diameter than the base of the micro-screen filter so don't seal it off well......
