Engine dies on intitial cold start
(1/1)
liberty:
When starting cold, engine starts and idles fine but if I put it in gear (automatic) it immediately dies. On restart there is no further problem. Ambient temperature 60 degrees. Carb: 17058204, electric choke, blocked EGR - GM Crate engine 12499529, 290hp, GM aluminum intake manifold 10185063
Cliff Ruggles:
This is actually the result of being pretty close with your choke pull-off adjustment, but just a tad lean, or the flap is open just a touch more than the engine can tolerate on a cold start-up.
On a good note, it's better than being a bit too rich, as this is not a good scenario for the engine. You might try adjusting the pull-off slightly by turning the adjustment screw clockwise every so slightly, which should help the situation.
It make take several cold start-ups to find the most ideal adjustment, and it may require just a bit less choke flap open angle for colder temperatures than what you are seeing now?......Cliff

Thanks for the informatiion - I'll experiment with the pull-off.
Incidentally, I'm a short distance through reading your Q-Jet book and have learned more in an hour of reading than I have in years of magazines.
Cliff Ruggles:
Thanks. I tried to cover as much about the Q-jet as possible in 128 pages.
When I prepared my first outline for the book, we had over 70 pages just in the High Performance Chapter! The publisher wanted 6 chapters pretty close in size, so we had to leave some of the more complicated stuff out.
If/when we do a re-write, I'll put in quite a bit more information on building race units and more complicated modifications, etc.......Cliff
