sucking sound
willie:
I just rebuilt a rochester 4bbl no17057253 below that 1677ap and installed it last week. I used your book and did the minimum make the carb better such as drilling out the idle tubes and the adjustment ports sounds like a large vacum leak.It will not idle it does not have any idle bypass air ports.Idont know where to look propane shows no air leaks.I installed a cadilac carb from a junkyard it has no sucking sound and idles ok but it is one nasty looking carb.I want to put my shiney carb back on I dont know where to begin,,other than dissasemble and look for errors.please help guide me or bless a carb rock and mail it to me. ???

I did a recipe job on my Buick carb and got a sucking sound and no idle.
After a lot of fruitles effort, I finally decided to remove the plywood open spacer and add a hard phenaulic 4 hole spacer.
My guess was that the carb was seeping air internally and the 4 hole spacer would support the bottom of the carb and sandwitch the gaskets with some squeeze from the bottom up. The carb had been unwarped, but there was possibily some sag in it somewhere until the 4 hole spacer gave it a solid foundation.

Thanks gary, I will try to put it back on tomorrow with a different gasket.I will post results soon. :)

Missing hot idle compensator???
Cliff Ruggles:
Did you get one of our HP kits? They come with the stock gasket, and the .250" thick 4 hole gasket. The thick gasket will seal up that carb on any intake designed for a spread bore carburetor.....Cliff
