Fretting Over Nothing?
« on: December 13, 2011, 09:46:09 AM »
Hi Cliff,
First, please accept my thanks for helping me to gain access here.
This site is a great service to all Q-Jet owners.
As you may recall (how could you ever forget(!) my long winded emails? ;D) I'm the guy from Nova Scotia with the modified 800 cfm single main airbleed carb # 17080213.
My question follows discovery of tolerance 'stack up' (sloppy factory machining) to the base plate of my carb.
The plate thickness (top to bottom face) is consistant front to rear and side to side... BUT have discovered both prim and sec throttle shaft bores were actually bored tilted ~ .009" to .010" from side to side... (measured with digital calipers).
Perhaps my concern is much ado' over nothing.
It just seems to me that running a fully divided dual plane setup that isn't precisely 'throttling' each side equally can't be a good thing.
An ever so slight difference (well... .009"- .010") in transition slot exposure can be seen upon close inspection.
Guess the question is: Nothing to be concerned about... or bite the bullet and do up another base plate?
Thanks for your time. Cheers!

I'm not sure that small amount would make any big difference.  I guess you've just got to run it, and if it works good, nothing to fix.  If it gives any issues anyplace, I'll replace it.....Cliff

Hi Cliff,
Yes, kinda figured it a 'grey area' deal.
Will run the setup and see how it does.
Incidentally, rec'd the HP kit and pulloff today... nice looking stuff.
My 406 SBC previously dynoed 504 HP.
What power level will a .135" N/S @ 6 PSI safely support?... BSFC within reason of course.
Thanks for your great product and service!
Cheers.

With an 8AN fuel system, sumped tank and 140gph electric pump, easily 600hp.  I set my regulator at 7psi at the track, never once had a single issue with fuel delivery.  My engine will make over 550hp and 600ft lbs torque.  It runs nearly into the 10's in full street trim in hot/humid weather, we actually "de-tune" it to stay above 11.49 at 1/4 mile tracks.....Cliff
