17057213 for off road
« on: April 30, 2012, 11:53:25 AM »
Cliff, I just had you put bushings in my carb and send me the rebuild kit with the vent block off. Got things running but it is starving on real steep climbs...this is on a Jeep on climbs steep enough to make the front tires very light on the ground. It will sit and idle but as soon as it is over 1500 rpm it is not getting fuel. I assume I need to raise the float (currently 9/32) but was wondering if the fuel pump could be weak and not be able to work against the gravity in that scenario. I was able to keep it running when I backed up the hill but that could be either thing. Thanks for any help!

That's what I would check next, it should be fine at pretty steep angles with that float setting....Cliff

Well I finally tracked down the problem. I replaced the manual fuel pump because it was over 20 years old anyhow. That was not the problem so I kept looking and found a peice of rubber hose that was used as a splice for the metal lines about half way between the pump and the tank. The hose had a crack running lengthwise but it was not leaking fuel (till I squeezed it) but must have been leaking air when there was enough gravity pulling the fuel in the tank.

Good news.  Modern fuel is really hard on anything rubber in the fuel system.  Even the new high quality NAPA fuel line I bought a few years ago for my car got ate up by this new gas.....Cliff
