Title: Help with broken throttle plate screws?
Post by: bobsessed on May 01, 2013, 07:48:38 AM
Taking my carb apart to rebuild with Cliff's kit, I broke 2 of the throttle plate screws. I managed to "ease-out" one of them, the the screw extractor actually broke off in the other. Now, of course, the tiny drill won't cut the piece of metal stuck in the screw. My question is, if I can't get that screw out, will it be OK to drill it larger and put in 1 new screw?......OR....., what would you do?

Yes, it's OK. You can drill out and tap to #4 or #6 screws.

Drill as close on center as you can with .104-.106" drill bit, tap for 6-32, no worries.  We see this ALL the time here.  I have #6-32 screws with pan heads on them, and they don't take up any more area than the factory 3-48's with Fillister heads.....Cliff

Yeah, Cliff took the broken screws in my carb. Did an awesome job.

Excellent....I got it out, now to tap and get new screws. Should I tap all four, or just the damaged one?

I usually do all of them, as the 6-32's are a better deal all the way around anyhow.....Cliff

Use loctite (red) or stake them, no need to do both....Cliff
