Hi guys. I thought I would put up the question up in here, since it seems that people in here are not so hung up on the usual "choppy idle is all that matters" junk.
I need advise regarding cam choice for a Buick 430. It is 10.25 cr, and it gets stiffer valvesprings and dualplane edelbrock aluminum intake ( for some reason, car is not mine )
The engine sits in a 1967 2-door wildcat and everything stays stock.
I want to put in a cam that takes advantage of the high cr, but does not have miserable idle.
Owner of the car suggests these two lunati cams.
Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 262/268
Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 219/227
Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .484/.505
LSA/ICL: 112/108
Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
RPM Range: 1300-5500
or
Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 268/276
Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 227/233
Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .505/.521
LSA/ICL: 110/106
I am worried about idlem with the LSA on the latter... But I guess the high compression will compensate somewhat for this?
Feel free to suggest other cams.

The last several Buicks we have built, we have had the cam custom ground to meet our needs/desires for the particular build. Cost only slightly more than an off the shelf cam, but has been well worth it for us. You might give that a consideration.

I have a lunati cam in a pontiac 455 with 220 - 230 @.050 110 LCA 106 ICL and it idles very well with
About13 in vac. I've been very pleased with how this cam runs.with about 9.5 CR.

I'd get a came from these folks, designed specifically for the Buick engines. They have longer off seat timing and plenty of choices with wide LSA, which is what I would use for what you are doing....Cliff

Great, thanks guys.
I am looking into one of those cams with a good high LSA.

I am thinking the 212 then... but I feel I can go bigger...
I am worried about the 110 LSA on the 284. It just seems low. My buddy's Buick 455 idles like crap with 110 LSA and 9:1 cr
I fall in love with the sleeper 288-94... Could I pull this off? converter stays stock mind you...

I'd avoid the 110 LSA as well. We have had much better luck with 112-114LSA, better idle, broader power curve, and less sensitive to octane, etc.....Cliff

114 LSA regardless of the sligthly high duration #'s ?
I am trying to understand how LSA and duration relate to each other when it comes to idle quality.
Is it correct that off-seat time does not effect idle quality?

well, owner of the car chose and bought the TA 112 cam before I could have anything to say. I have a strong feeling the TA 212 would have been more fun without less idlequality.
Thanks for your advise anyways !
