I'm rebuilding a 17057262 and following procedure on p.82 to form new checkball seat. After tapping lightly with old checkball I tested by putting new checkball in and filled the passage above it with brake cleaner. Looked good at first but after about 5 minutes I saw a little fluid seeping into the accelerator pump bore. I tried it again tapping harder but problem got worse, fluid came in right away. I cleaned the seating area and kept trying to form the seat but can't get it to stay dry in accel pump bore. Is this a valid test? The old checkball that I used had a little corrosion on it but it felt smooth. Should I try a different used checkball to form the seat? I have been using a steel punch to seat the ball, maybe I deformed it. I don't want to hit it so hard that I break something. Getting very frustrated now, spending too much time on what should have been a simple step.

It rarely takes more than a few light taps to effectively form a new seat.
I use a brass punch to avoid "flat spotting" the check ball.
For sure don't hit it too hard and there isn't a lot of integrity in that area and you can break the bottom right out of the carburetor......Cliff

I'm still working on it but no success. Do I continue with light taps or should I hit it progressively harder? Does the accel pump bore need to stay bone dry or is a little seepage OK? The best I've done is it stays dry for a few minutes then I can see a little moisture creeping into the bore. I'm using a different used check ball to form the seat but no luck. How important is this step? I'm almost ready to take this one out back for target practice and try a different carb.

It's metal on metal so I'd suppose if you waiting long enough you may see a little seepage, really nothing to worry about.......
