Title: which carb
Post by: garyg on July 27, 2010, 06:21:56 AM
I have a 1980 transam indy pace car with a fresh 1977 400ci. It has a xe262h cam ,headers and some head work. It came with a 1708559 carb. This seems to date as something from a 1985 car. I was given a
7045274 carb. The one on the car is not working that well ,it backfires sometimes when stomping the throttle. Which would be a better carb to rebuild.

Cliff's site has a page that deciphers that here:
http://www.cliffshighperformance.dreamhosters.com/tech_carb_ID_2.html (http://www.cliffshighperformance.dreamhosters.com/tech_carb_ID_2.html)

But there is no Listing for the "9" which is in the Division (marque) position. Possibly a boat/marine or oddball division?
Essentially it decodes as a 1985 California emission 4 barrel Auto Transmission carb?

It was quiet a work today so is was surfing the net. I found info that said the 17085594 was
from a 1985-86 olds 5.0 liter 307 with AT Canada. The other carb is from a 1975 6.6 liter pontiac
firefird so I will probably get a rebuild kit for it . My car is a frankenstein, a 1977 engine ,1985 carb,
1980 body, not sure about the year of the transmission.

Yep, the 75 Pontiac unit is a very good choice.  Not as good as the 76 and later APT style, but equal in performance everyplace with correct tuning......Cliff
