I have a carb I got off a 79 TA 400 4 spd parts car ,the engine was swapped to a 455 but I think the carb is original. I'm looking for an 800 CFM canidate for a 455 project, is this a good carb for that application? The number is 17059263, I looked the number up on Wallace Racing but it wasn't listed. Thanks

That is the correct carb for the Pontiac 400 engine in 1979 with the manual transmission. Excellent unit, same as the one I use on my 455 up near 600hp.
They are emission calibrated, and just a tad lean everyplace, but an excellent starting point for a real nice HP carburetor....Cliff

This carb has that big horn in the middle that looks like it will interfere with the air cleaner? Is this something that is shaker specific? Thanks
-
Heres a picture of what I'm referring to.

yes . you'll need the 78-79 W72 air cleaner . any 400 t/a air cleaner will work but correct looks like this.
looks about the same as the early 70's - 76 but is different. because of the valve cover vent tube and egr holes. so 78-9 is correct.

this one will work its 77 W72 and 77-78 L78 400's 79 400 was 4 speed only.

but if you want to ever sell your carb , do let me know..

I'm not using a shaker this is for a GTO engine, and I think it will interfere with my air cleaner. So if I use this carb I would need to put a hole in the air cleaner base to clear this tube? I'm using an aftermarket aluminum air cleaner.
-
or find a olds 403 carb. or cut the tube , Ive seen that. but would hate to see that happen to that carb.
but the tube should be up in the air cleaner so dirt wont get into your carb.
-
The vent tube MUST extend inside the air cleaner base, or it will vent to the outside (dirty) air. A corresponding hole is required, and sealed up to keep dirt out of the engine, just like the factory set-ups.....Cliff
