Title: camshaft

I know it's a carb forum but I thought I'd ask to get an opinion.

I have a 1977 Firebird with a stock 400 and 6X heads. I need a replacement cam what should I use? The car will be used mostly for highway driving as it has an overdrive trans. Looking for good gas mileage.

Here are some; Melling CL-MTP-1  (mild, good low torque and midrange)
                          Comp XE 256       (a bit more cam than above)
                          Crower 60916      (even a bit more and maybe needs more compression for best results)

The melling cams are very good quality and the price is good too.
These are just some cams. and jus my opinions of what would work with the low compression.
The melling cam would be most like the stock cam of the 3. Of course you could get a stock cam and Melling makes them too I believe.  If you had the money, you cant beat a hydraulic roller though but that is another area I have not looked into.

The Crower 60240, 210/221/112 is a very good choice for those engines....Cliff

Can these cams be used with the stock rocker arm nut torqued to 20 ft lbs or do they require lock nuts and valve adjustment like a chevy? That's something I want to avoid.

The Crower 60240 doesn't require any aftermarket parts.  I still like to replace the bottle-neck studs and go to BBC studs and adjustable lock-nuts with all Pontiac set-ups......Cliff
