Title: Ford F100 390 converting to Q-jet ?
Post by: Rokker on February 26, 2012, 09:46:26 PM
I`m looking for a lot of torque and the best mpg I can get out of my Ford F100 with a 1972 390 2v.
Motor is stock but I`m willing to do the basic route:
Carb
Performer intake
Cam (torque torque torque)
Headers

It now features a 280cfm Holley remanufactured 2v carb motorcraft style.
Great off idle very boring everywhere else..

Would a q-jet be a nice carb for this engine ?
I think I would like very much to play with apt to get as good mpg as possible out of this brick.

I wan`t torque but most of all great mpg, for what it is...

A q-jet would be a good choice for what you are doing.  I would use a later model carb converted to electric choke.  Do you have one of our books?  It covers carburetor selection.....Cliff

i dont know what you plan on running for a cam. but i run a 262 isky megacam in my 72 429 ltd with a quadrajet. makes 480 ft.lbs of torque at about 2000 rpm makes 380 hp at 5200rpm. has 9.7 -1 comp edelbrock performer rpm intake with stock exhaust manifolds.im running a 17059212 carb. ive got the cam timed straight up it has 108 lc.i believe ford retarded the crank timing beginning in late 71 to 4 degrees and later on to 8 degreees thats why they were such slugs.hope this helps .dean

Great info guys ! Sorry for replying so late. Never got an email telling me someone had answered..

Actually looking at the 262 or 264 isky cam, kinda leaning towards the 264 until I read your response 429bbf. When do you feel it stops pulling ?

Your book Cliff was on a 4000mile road trip in a 65 chevelle this summer, oslo-barcelona-oslo :) Ran both edelbrock and q-jet on the trip.
Averaging around 22mpg at 70 !

i used the edelbrock performer rpm manifold so the q jet would bolt right on without a spacer. it pulls strong to 5500 i have stock exhaust manifolds, the factory 2into 1 y pipe that i sawed off at the y then i installed a 3-1/2 pipe to a 3-1/2 flowmaster muffler with a short 3-1/2 tail pipe.with 2.75 gears she tops out at 155mph.dean

Wow, 4000 miles.  That's pretty good fuel economy for the combination of parts.....Cliff
