Title: stiff throttle
Post by: jozw30 on May 13, 2012, 06:06:37 AM
I have a 72 Olds W30 speed with a Rochester quadrajet that has become increasingly difficult to live with.

The throttle becomes so stiff and sticks as the car heats up.  The car is not running too hot, and I've done/checked the following:

- had the carb restored a couple of years ago, it's beautiful.  Have discussed the condition with the builder but we have not figured out what it is.

- new cable have removed the cable from the carb and it moves freely.

- the throttle shafts were re-bushed and if I remove the pump rod pre-load they turn freely as well.

- I pulled the top off the carb yesterday and noticed a dimple in the pump seal and another strange thing, the white plastic seal holder at the end of the pump rod was jammed in the full extended position.  I had to hit it on the edge of the bench to break it loose.  I had a couple others and could not make them  do this.  I used a new one and new seal thinking I had solved my problem.  No dice.  Took the car to the local cruise and after about a mile it was almost un-drivable.  It sticks so bad I have to push the pedal hard to break it loose.
- all other linkage works as it's supposed to.

I am ready to just go buy a generic quadrajet so I can enjoy the car a little.

Any one have any ideas?

ill take a shot at it. how tight are the hold down bolts should be no more than 10 ft.lbs.did you tighten them sort of equal? have you tried driving it with the acc.pump unhooked ? how tight are you cranking the air cleaner nut?some thing is causing the carb to bind when it heats up.have you stopped when it binds and tried to throttle it by hand? just my 2 cents.
